What this tool does

An EPUB is a ZIP archive of web pages, images and a few XML files that describe the reading order. Most phones and e-readers have an app for it, but a computer without one makes a book awkward to peek into. This reader gives you a quick way to check what is inside a file: is it the right edition, are the chapters in order, did the images survive a conversion.

The reader shows one chapter at a time, in the order the book’s package file lists them. The chapter menu uses the book’s own table of contents when it has one. Right-to-left languages such as Arabic and Hebrew are detected from the book’s language tag and displayed right to left.

Chapter content is cleaned before it is shown. Scripts, forms, frames, event handlers and remote loads are removed, and the chapter is displayed in a sandboxed frame that cannot run code. That is a deliberate trade-off: interactive EPUB 3 books that depend on scripts will show their text but not their interactivity.

How to use this tool

  1. Select the EPUB: drag it onto the drop area or press Choose an EPUB file. The page confirms the title and the number of reading-order items it found.
  2. There are no processing options. Text size and the dark theme are changed inside the reader after it opens.
  3. Press Open book in reader. The first section appears in the frame below.
  4. Move through the book with the Previous and Next buttons or pick a section from the menu. Use A− and A+ to resize text and Dark to switch the theme.
  5. Nothing needs to be downloaded. If the book looks wrong, try the EPUB Validator to see which structural problem is responsible.

Privacy and safety

This tool runs entirely in your browser. When you choose a file it is read by JavaScript on this page; it is not uploaded to PDFSwift or to any other server, and the result is created on your device and handed to you as a download. Closing or reloading the tab discards the book from memory.

The page shows advertising supplied by a third party. Advertising scripts run separately from the tool and never receive your book. If you prefer, you can disconnect from the internet after the page has loaded and the tool will still work.

Frequently asked questions

What is an EPUB reader used for?

It lets you check or read a book without installing an app. It is handy for confirming that a converted or downloaded file opens, that the chapters are in order and that images are present.

Is my book uploaded?

No. The file is read and rendered by JavaScript in your browser. There is no upload step and the page does not send the book anywhere.

Which EPUB versions work?

EPUB 2 and EPUB 3. Both are ZIP archives with a package document; the reader follows the package’s reading order for either version.

Why is a chapter blank or missing images?

The most common causes are an image path that points to a file not in the archive, or an image larger than 4 MB, which the reader skips to protect memory. The Validator lists missing files by name.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes, on any current mobile browser. Very large illustrated books can exhaust a phone’s memory; if that happens, try a desktop browser.

Will my reading position be saved?

No. The tool keeps nothing between visits, which is also why it needs no account. Reload the page and the book closes.

Can it open DRM-protected books?

No. Encrypted books keep their text scrambled and this tool does not and will not remove protection.
