Why EPUB needs its own tools
An EPUB is a ZIP archive of HTML pages, images and a few XML files. That makes it easy to read and easy to break: a re-zipped folder, a renamed chapter or an empty language field is enough for a reading app to refuse a book. The tools on this page work with that structure directly. You can look inside a book, fix what is wrong, change what it says about itself, or turn it into text, Markdown or PDF.
How processing works
| Local tools (this site) | Server service (API) | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it runs | In your browser, on your device | PDFSwift’s EPUB Worker on Cloudflare |
| Is the book uploaded? | No | Yes, for the length of the request. Not stored; processed in memory. |
| Cost | Free, supported by advertising | Pro entitlement for operations that change or convert books |
| Available now | All tools listed above | API only: validate, read metadata, edit metadata and cover, repair, convert to TXT/Markdown, merge |
| Best for | Single books, privacy | Batch jobs and integrations |
The server service is documented for developers and is not wired into these pages. Nothing on this page needs it.
Supported formats and limits
- Input: EPUB 2 and EPUB 3 files (
.epub), up to 100 MB. Anything else is rejected before processing. - Archive safety: files with unsafe paths (such as
../), duplicate entries, more than 8,000 entries or an expanded size above 500 MB are refused. - Not supported: DRM-protected books and books with encrypted or font-obfuscated resources (
META-INF/encryption.xml) can be opened for inspection but cannot be converted or merged. - Memory: the whole book is held in your browser’s memory. Very large illustrated books may fail on a phone; a desktop browser has far more headroom.
- Outputs: EPUB, plain text (UTF-8), Markdown, ZIP, and PDF through your browser’s print engine.
- Not supported: DRM removal, fixed-layout comics as reflowable text, OCR of image-only books.

Frequently asked questions
Are my books uploaded to PDFSwift?
No. Every tool on this page runs in your browser. The book is read and processed by code on the page and the result is created on your device.
Which EPUB versions are supported?
EPUB 2 and EPUB 3. Files up to 100 MB are accepted, subject to your device’s memory.
What is the difference between the free tools and Pro?
All tools on this page are free and local. A separate server-side EPUB service exists for batch and programmatic use; operations that change or convert books there require a Pro entitlement. It is not part of the tool pages yet.
Can these tools remove DRM?
No. Protected books cannot be inspected, edited, converted or merged, and these tools do not try to remove protection.
Does EPUB to PDF keep Arabic and other right-to-left text?
Yes. Right-to-left books are detected from the book’s language and printed right to left using your browser’s layout engine.
Is the validator the same as EPUBCheck?
No. It checks the structure that most often makes books fail. For formal conformance use W3C EPUBCheck.
