What this tool does
A cover is a small image, but it is referenced from several places: the package manifest, a metadata entry that names it, and often a cover page in the reading order. Swapping the file without updating those references is how covers end up blank or doubled. The editor performs the whole change.
When the new image has the same type as the old one, the file is replaced in place. When the type differs, for example a PNG replacing a JPEG, the file gets a matching extension, the manifest entry’s href and media-type are rewritten, and every reference to the old path in the book’s XHTML, CSS, SVG and navigation files is rewritten as well.
If no cover was found, the tool adds one: a manifest item flagged as the cover image (EPUB 3) together with the older cover metadata understood by EPUB 2 readers. A separate cover page is not created, which is how most reading apps and libraries take covers anyway.
How to use this tool
- Choose the EPUB. The current cover (if any) appears on the left.
- Choose the new image on the right. It must be a JPEG, PNG, GIF or WebP file up to 15 MB; a preview appears.
- Press Save EPUB with new cover. The tool builds the file and validates it.
- Press Download EPUB with new cover and import it into your reading app.
- If the app still shows the old cover, remove the book from the app and add it again; many apps cache covers.
Supported formats and limitations
- New cover formats: JPEG, PNG, GIF, WebP (detected from the image’s bytes, not its file name).
- Size: up to 15 MB. For reading apps a cover of roughly 1000–1600 pixels on the long side is plenty.
- Updated: manifest entry, media type, file name when the type changes, and references in XHTML, CSS, SVG and NCX files.
- Not done: the image is not resized, cropped or recompressed, so what you choose is what is embedded.
- Input: EPUB 2 and EPUB 3 files (
.epub), up to 100 MB. Anything else is rejected before processing. - Archive safety: files with unsafe paths (such as
../), duplicate entries, more than 8,000 entries or an expanded size above 500 MB are refused. - Not supported: DRM-protected books and books with encrypted or font-obfuscated resources (
META-INF/encryption.xml) can be opened for inspection but cannot be converted or merged. - Memory: the whole book is held in your browser’s memory. Very large illustrated books may fail on a phone; a desktop browser has far more headroom.
Privacy and safety
This tool runs entirely in your browser. When you choose a file it is read by JavaScript on this page; it is not uploaded to PDFSwift or to any other server, and the result is created on your device and handed to you as a download. Closing or reloading the tab discards the book from memory.
The page shows advertising supplied by a third party. Advertising scripts run separately from the tool and never receive your book. If you prefer, you can disconnect from the internet after the page has loaded and the tool will still work.
Frequently asked questions
How do I change the cover of an EPUB?
Load the book, choose a new image and press Save EPUB with new cover. Download and import the new file.
Which image formats can I use?
JPEG, PNG, GIF and WebP. The format is detected from the content of the file.
What if the EPUB has no cover?
The tool adds one and marks it as the cover so that reading apps and libraries can display it.
Why does my reader still show the old cover?
Many apps store a copy of the cover when a book is first imported. Remove the book and import the edited file.
Is the image uploaded?
No. The image and the book are handled by your browser only.
Does it change anything else in the book?
Only the cover image, the package entries that name it, and references to its file name. Text and other images are untouched.
What is a good cover size?
A portrait image around 1000 to 1600 pixels tall at a 2:3 ratio works well. Very large images only make the file bigger.
