What this tool does
Library apps sort and group books by metadata. A wrong author spelling, a missing language or a title with a stray “(Z-Library)” suffix means the book appears in the wrong place or cannot be searched. Editing metadata is the safest EPUB change you can make, because it touches one small XML file.
This editor reads the book’s package document, shows the current values, and writes your changes back by editing that file as text. The remaining files in the archive are copied byte for byte, which the tool’s test suite checks. For EPUB 3 books the required dcterms:modified timestamp is refreshed so the file stays valid.
After saving, the tool re-opens the result and runs the structural validator, so you see immediately whether the edited book still has errors. Multiple authors and subjects are entered one per line. Title and language cannot be left empty because both are mandatory in the EPUB specification.
How to use this tool
- Choose an EPUB. The form below fills in with the values found in the book.
- Edit any of the fields. Enter several authors or subjects on separate lines. Use a language code such as
en,arorfr-CA. - Press Save edited EPUB. The tool builds the new file and runs a validation of the result.
- Check the output summary, then press Download edited EPUB.
- Copy the new file into your reading app or library. Your original file on disk is unchanged until you replace it yourself.
Supported formats and limitations
- Editable: title, authors, language, publisher, publication date, description, subjects, rights.
- Not editable here: unique identifier (ISBN/UUID), series information and any custom
metaproperties; they are preserved as they are. - Input/output: EPUB 2 and EPUB 3. The output keeps the original version.
- Guarantee: content documents, images, fonts and stylesheets are byte-identical to the input.
- Cover: to replace the cover image use the cover editor.
- Input: EPUB 2 and EPUB 3 files (
.epub), up to 100 MB. Anything else is rejected before processing. - Archive safety: files with unsafe paths (such as
../), duplicate entries, more than 8,000 entries or an expanded size above 500 MB are refused. - Not supported: DRM-protected books and books with encrypted or font-obfuscated resources (
META-INF/encryption.xml) can be opened for inspection but cannot be converted or merged. - Memory: the whole book is held in your browser’s memory. Very large illustrated books may fail on a phone; a desktop browser has far more headroom.
Privacy and safety
This tool runs entirely in your browser. When you choose a file it is read by JavaScript on this page; it is not uploaded to PDFSwift or to any other server, and the result is created on your device and handed to you as a download. Closing or reloading the tab discards the book from memory.
The page shows advertising supplied by a third party. Advertising scripts run separately from the tool and never receive your book. If you prefer, you can disconnect from the internet after the page has loaded and the tool will still work.
Frequently asked questions
How do I change the title or author of an EPUB?
Load the book, edit the Title or Author(s) field and press Save edited EPUB. Download the new file.
Does editing metadata change the book’s text?
No. Only the package document changes. All other files in the archive are copied unchanged.
Which language code should I use?
A BCP 47 tag: two letters for most languages (en, fr, ar, de), optionally with a region (pt-BR, fr-CA).
Why can’t I leave the title empty?
The EPUB specification requires a title and a language. The editor refuses an empty value so the output stays valid.
Is the book uploaded?
No. The edit happens in your browser and the new file is created on your device.
Will my reading app notice the change?
Most apps read metadata when a book is imported. Remove the old copy and import the edited file; some apps cache old details until you do.
Can I fix the identifier too?
Not in this tool. Changing the identifier can break reading-progress sync in apps that use it, so it is left alone.
