Lossless paint on white
PDF to PNG uses the same PDF.js path as JPG: viewport scale 2, alpha: false, background #ffffff, then toBlob as image/png. There is no quality argument, because PNG is lossless. There is also no alpha in the canvas, so “transparent export” is the wrong promise. The ticket that asked for a clear wordmark ended with an export from the design app. This page is for figures trapped in a report.
Locked files do not render. Rotate first if the diagram is sideways. The script does not restyle the page. It photographs it. Script and worker come from the CDN over HTTPS. The PDF stays in the tab and is not written to a store.
| Source | Result |
|---|---|
| Diagram with 1-pixel rules | Edges stay. File is large. Use it |
| Full-page photo | Little gain over JPG 0.92. Prefer JPG |
| Logo expecting a clear surround | White rectangle. Wrong door |
| Drop shadow meant for a colored layout | Shadow ends at a hard white edge |
Figures that have to stay crisp
A flowchart inside a spec
Eleven boxes and hairline arrows. JPG chewed the lines into dashes. PNG held them at about 2.4 MB for one letter page. Placed at 900 pixels wide, it looked like the spec.
A line diagram on a navy slide
Crop the white margin in an editor until a few pixels remain. The thin rim says “this was a page.” Do not run a good transparent PNG through a PDF and back out. You will acquire the white card.
Tell the printer the pixel dimensions and that the file is a scale-2 screen render. If they refuse it, send the PDF. The refusal is useful.
OCR
Do not OCR this PNG when the PDF already has a text layer. PDF to Word reads that layer. The PNG is for eyes. OCRing the picture adds errors the file did not have.
Export, then check identity
- Split to the figure page if the report is long.
- Drop the PDF and export PNG.
- Open it on the background it will sit on, at 100%.
- Rename from
-page-3.pngto the figure number only after the thumbnail matches the figure, not the caption.
The white-box correction is the longer account of the alpha flag.
When the megabytes are the point
A letter-size diagram at scale 2 often lands between 1 MB and 3 MB because PNG keeps the hard edges. That size is acceptable for a figure and wasteful for a photo that would have been fine as JPEG 0.92. Convert the diagram here and the photo on PDF to JPG. Mixing them into one format because the folder looks tidier is how a slide deck becomes enormous.
The white background is the same flag as the JPG path. If a designer asked for a knockout, this file is the wrong deliverable even though the extension is PNG. Say that in the reply and export the asset from the original artboard.
Frequently asked questions
Does the PNG keep transparency?
The format can. This export does not. The context is created with alpha false and the background is #ffffff. You get a flattened page. A logo that looked clear on an artboard comes back as a white card.
Why is one diagram 2.4 MB?
PNG is lossless at scale 2. Hairlines stay binary, which is why a flowchart survives here and breaks up as JPEG. A product photo at the same scale is often visually identical to the JPG sibling and several times heavier. Use JPG for that page.
Can I export only figure 2?
Not from a control on this page. The loop is every page. Split page 3 out, then convert the one-page PDF. Rename to the figure number only after you have checked it is not the caption page.
A dark slide shows a white rim.
The page was painted on white. Crop to the linework. Do not feather the edge to fake a knockout. The rim is honest. A feather looks nervous at the zoom your boss uses.
Is this CMYK?
No. You get browser canvas pixels. A brand chip should be exported from the design file. Chasing a navy shift inside this PNG will waste an hour.
Are pages uploaded?
No. Same renderer as JPG, different mime type. A huge single page can still exhaust RAM because one viewport at scale 2 can be enormous. That is a memory failure, not an unsupported format.
